Triangle Area Wildlife Rehabilitators

Below is the list of individuals with valid wildlife rehabilitation permits according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission as of 6/16/2016.  An effort is made to keep this list current  but no guarantee is made.  Listing indicates that, according to available information, the individual or organization has current permits and/or licenses for the specified species but does not constitute an endorsement.  The permits/licenses are issued by the state of North Carolina and, where applicable, the Federal Government.  Licensed individuals are volunteers and rehabilitation services are provided at their own time and expense.  The permits/licenses are for rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned native wildlife species and are required for the possession of these animals.  Rehabilitators are not licensed or authorized to trap or capture nuisance animals, animal species classified as rabies vectors, animal species classed as endangered or threatened, or select other species as specified by state or federal regulations.  For removal of dead animals contact your local city or county government for instructions.

NOTE: Raccoons, foxes, skunks, bats and coyotes are classed by the state of North Carolina as rabies vectors and may not be rehabilitated or relocated.  There are no exceptions or exemptions to this restriction and North Carolina state law does not allow any exemption to be given.  Animals in their natural environment should be left alone unless they are acting abnormally.  (Simply being outside during daylight hours is not, by itself, abnormal behavior.)  If you have one of these species trapped in a living space or acting abnormally you should call your local animal control.

There have been recent reports of individuals and groups falsely claiming to be representatives of the North Carolina Wildlife Commission.  Be aware that only wildlife officers, state biologists, or other employees of that Commission can legally make this claim.  Wildlife rehabilitators are not officials of the Wildlife Commission and can not legally claim to be so.  They do not have authority to violate state laws nor do they have the authority to exempt others from those laws.  This includes laws which prohibit the rehabilitation or treatment of rabies vector species (there are NO exemptions to this restriction) or transport of animals (other than birds covered by Federal Licenses) across state lines.  Be aware that it is NOT legal, and a violation of North Carolina law to take in or relocate a rabies vector species and a violation of both state and federal laws to transport wild mammals, particularly rabies vector species, across state lines.

Only contact individuals or organizations licensed for the species in question.

1 Permit Codes: Codes other than "full permit" apply only to specialty permits and indicate the individual does not hold the permit but is approved to provided support for and under the direction of someone with a full permit.  Individuals who provide support are not authorized to hold the animals other than to provide immediate assistance while arranging to get them to the primary permit holder. (Time limits apply.)  Federal regulations require a list of those providing such support for federally regulated animals to be on file with the office which issues the federal permit.
